Monty Python Stars Launch Terry Jones Statue Campaign in Colwyn Bay

Stars of the much-loved comedy group Monty Python have joined forces to launch a campaign to build a statue of the late Terry Jones in Colwyn Bay.

The campaign was announced on the eighth anniversary of Jones' death, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 77 following a long battle with dementia.

The statue, which is being designed by sculptor Nick Elphick, will be located on the promenade in Colwyn Bay, where Jones grew up.

The campaign is being supported by a number of high-profile figures, including:

  • Michael Palin
  • John Cleese
  • Eric Idle
  • Terry Gilliam
  • Carol Cleveland

The campaign has already raised over £50,000 towards its £100,000 target.

Michael Palin said: "Terry was a great friend and colleague, and I'm delighted to be supporting this campaign to build a statue in his memory. He was a true original, and his work brought joy to millions of people around the world."

John Cleese said: "Terry was a brilliant comedian and writer, and he will be greatly missed. This statue will be a fitting tribute to his legacy."

Eric Idle said: "Terry was a very special person, and I'm so glad that we're able to do this for him. He was a great supporter of Colwyn Bay, and I know he would be thrilled to have a statue there."

Terry Gilliam said: "Terry was a visionary artist, and this statue will be a wonderful way to celebrate his life and work."

Carol Cleveland said: "Terry was a wonderful friend and mentor, and I'm so proud to be involved in this campaign. He was a true giant of comedy, and he deserves to be remembered in this way."

The campaign is being managed by the Colwyn Bay Town Council, which has pledged £25,000 towards the project.

The statue is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
