EU Weighs Schengen Reforms Amid Migration Crisis

MEP Manfred Weber: "We Believe in Schengen"

EU Considers Reforming Border-Free Zone Amid Migration Pressures

The European Union is contemplating reforms to its border-free Schengen zone as it grapples with an influx of migrants. MEP Manfred Weber, the head of the European People's Party (EPP), emphasized the EU's commitment to Schengen, stating, "We believe in Schengen and we want to defend Schengen." However, Weber acknowledged the need for adjustments, adding, "But we have to make Schengen function better."

The Schengen zone, which comprises 26 European countries, allows for passport-free travel within its borders. However, the recent surge in migration has strained the system, leading to calls for stricter border controls and reforms to the asylum system.

Weber outlined several potential reforms, including strengthening the EU's external borders, improving cooperation between member states on asylum seekers, and establishing a common European asylum system. He emphasized the need for a "fair distribution" of asylum seekers among EU countries.

The European Commission is expected to present proposals for Schengen reforms in the coming months. The reforms are likely to face debate and opposition, as some member states are reluctant to give up control over their borders.

However, Weber stressed the importance of finding a solution that balances the need for security with the principles of freedom of movement and solidarity. He said, "We have to find a way to protect our external borders and to make sure that people who have the right to asylum get asylum, but also to make sure that people who don't have the right to asylum don't come to Europe."

The outcome of the Schengen reform discussions will have significant implications for the future of free movement within the EU and for the bloc's ability to manage migration effectively.
